TEXARKANA — Pleasant Grove goes for the district 14-4A title and Liberty-Eylau tries to end five game district skid tonight at PG.
The Hawks are coming off another shutout district win blanking Paris 11-0 Tuesday. PG has now outscored district opponents 54-5 posting four shutouts. Head Coach Riley Fincher expects a close game with Liberty-Eylau “He’s (Fowler) got his guys playing at a high level and playing an exciting brand”. Fincher continued “anytime you have a team full of athletes they put the ball in play and they make you make plays on them”
Liberty-Eylau started district play at 2-0 before meeting PG at home losing 5-2 back on March 31st. Since then LE has lost five in a row last two losses were by a combined three runs.
“They’ve all been dog fights, except for game at North Lamar” said Zach Fowler LE Head Coach. “It’s not that we are playing bad ball it’s just that we aren’t doing enough to win and at times finding a way to lose”
LE had a tough loss at Atlanta back on April 12th. The Leopards had a 6-2 lead in bottom of 7th only to lose after the Rabbs scored five runs with two outs to win in walk off fashion.
Coach Fowler isn’t doing much talking about playoff race because his senior class is taking the lead. “The senior class right now are the ones making the push” Fowler continued. “They’ve been in a playoff race last year and that’s carrying over. They know they are never out of it until the last out is made”. The Leopards stand at 2-5 in district play and still control own destiny.
Pitchers tonight will be Tyler Jeans for PG and Garrett Brooks for LE. Fowler speaking about Brooks said “ there hasn’t been a game he’s pitched that he hasn’t kept us in, we expect the same tonight”. As for Jeans coach Fincher offered these words “He fills up the strike zone early and often and lets guys behind him make a lot of plays”. Coach Fincher continued “at his best he’s not going to strike a lot of people out, but he’s gonna make the hitters put the ball in play”
