TYLER, Texas — Pleasant Grove used the combination of dominating pitching and timely hitting to defeat Argyle 8-0 Saturday in Tyler and advance to the 4A region II baseball finals for the 9th time in the past ten seasons.
The 4th ranked Hawks outscored 2nd ranked Argyle 14-1 in the two games and held the Eagles to only six hits in the two games.
On Thursday Caleb Bolden beat Argyle 6-1, and on Saturday, Tyler Jeans was even every bit as good. Jeans coming off a 91 pitch 9-inning no hitter in his last start threw 113 pitches in ending the Eagles season.
Jeans and Argyle starter Sean Bolin both were throwing gems after five shut out innings before the Hawks finally broke through in the top of the sixth inning. Caleb Bolden led off the inning with a single, and Heath Ferguson walked. Carson Cox followed with a ground back to the pitcher. But when Bolin tried to throw out Bolden advancing to third, his throw got past the third baseman, allowing Bolden to score the games first run.
After striking out Keaton Russo, Argyle intentionally walked Jeans to load the bases, bringing up Conor Oullette. Oullette lined a 2-0 pitch into centerfield where a diving Watson Timmons was unable to catch the ball, which rolled all the way to the outfield fence. Oullette ended up at third base with a bases clearing triple and the Hawks were up 4-0.
PG (33-5) would add four more runs in the 7th inning. Bolden just missed hitting home run by inches as he drove a ball to the top of the 20 foot high wall the circles the outfield at Mike Carter field, ending up at second base with a double. Ferguson reached on an error and Carson Cox was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Reliever Hayden Clearman entered the game for Argyle and promptly walked Russo to make it 5-0. Jeans singled into right field to drive in two more runs and Oullette drove in his 4th run of the day with a bunt single to up the Hawk lead to 8-0.
After Jeans reaches the UIL pitch limit with one out in the bottom of the 7th, Will Hlavinka got the last two outs to end Argyle’s season at 25-3-1. Jeans went 6 1/3 innings, gave up no runs, three hits and two walks while striking out six and running his record to 13-0 this season.
PG will face Decatur in the regional finals. Game one starts at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday back at Mike Carter Field in Tyler.
