For five innings Canton pitcher Steven Sterling kept Pleasant Grove batters at bay. But the Hawks figured out the senior left handed pitcher and two relievers in the 6th inning as they beat the Eagles 9-0 in Game 1 of their Regional Quarterfinal series Thursday night at Hawk Field.
Keaton Russo led off the 6th with a double and the Hawks were on their way. Tyler Jeans was hit by a pitch and Canton pulled out Sterling and brought in freshman pitcher Caleb Phillips who walked Conor Oullette. That brought up Will Hlavinka. The senior first
baseman launched Phillips first pitch over the wall in right center field to give the Hawks a 4-0 lead. It was the first home run of Hlavinka’s career.
After two outs, the Hawks offense started up again. Caleb Bolden singled, Heath Ferguson was hit by a pitch and Carson Cox singled to make it 5-0.
Russo, followed with his second double of the inning, driving in Ferguson and Cox to give the Hawks a 7-0 lead. Phillips was then replaced by another freshman, Colby Johnson. Tyler Jeans then blasted Johnson’s second pitch over the right field fence to increase the lead to 9-0. It was Jeans 4th HR of the season and the second in his last two games.
Caleb Bolden threw a complete game 4-hitter, striking out 11 to up his record to 12-1 on the year.
The Hawks (30-3) will travel to Canton (26-6) at 1pm tomorrow for game 2 of the series.
